Cataloging Instructions for New Circulating Books

The following applies only to books being added to the circulating collections – not reference or special, non-circulating collections. It applies to all new books – whether purchased or received as a gift. Only the item type is affected by this process. The temporary item type should only be set once the book is in hand – not at the time the book is ordered.

College at Florham Library

When adding the item record:

Perm. Loc. = Madison Stacks or Madison Oversize (or other circulating location)

Item Type = FDU Circulating Item

Temp. Loc. = blank

Temp. Type = FDU New Book – 28 day

Note: if the item is to be placed on reserve, then do not enter the temporary item type. Give to Circulation staff for reserve processing.

Weiner Library

When adding the item record:

Perm. Loc. = Weiner Stacks or Weiner Oversize (or other circulating location)

Item Type = FDU Circulating Item

Temp. Loc. = Weiner New Books

Temp. Type = FDU New Book – 28 day OR

FDU New Book – 14 day (as appropriate)

Note: if the item is to be placed on reserve, then follow normal reserve processing procedures.

Removal of Temporary Item Types

A monthly report will be generated which will list those items (both libraries) which have had a temporary item type of “FDU New Book – 28 day” for more than 90 days. These temporary item types will be removed at that time by Head of Tech Services. This will not affect the temporary locations, nor the “FDU New Book – 14 day” temporary item types set on Weiner books. Removal of any other temporary item types (New Book - 14 day or reserve) and temporary locations will be handled manually by Tech Services staff.
